The air conditioner needs attention for the winter

It seems a bit counter intuitive to add the air conditioner to the winter prep list.

But that’s exactly what I did this year.

And honestly, I like protecting this air conditioner and it’s easy. We got a new heating and cooling system installed last spring and that’s when I learned about protecting the air conditioner in the winter. Prior to this new HVAC unit, we really didn’t have all that much air conditioning. Where we live, the summer heat gets uncomfortable for 6 or 8 weeks during the summer. I’ve always simply installed window unit air conditioners and moved on. Again, the HVAC concern around this region isn’t HVAC cooling. However, when we upgraded the HVAC equipment, it was time to add central air conditioning as well. This is both for us and to add value to the house. We won’t be here all that much longer. In a few years, we will be retiring down south and leaving all this winter behind. Can’t say that I’ll be all that sad to see no more snow and ice. Nor will I miss all those high heating costs from the gas furnace. Although with the new gas furnace, we are enjoying significant savings. Anyway, with having central air conditioning now, I learned that I needed to get a cover for the HVAC cabinet in the winter. The HVAC cabinet is the part of the air conditioning that sits next to the house outside. This thing is in the elements all year. With the hard plastic cover, I am keeping the weight of the snow and ice off delicate HVAC parts.
