I learned good health habits from my mother

I learned my dedication to good health, clean eating and dedicated physical fitness habits from my mother. While my brother and I were growing up, she prepared every meal from scratch. We never ate processed foods, fast foods or take-out. There were no unhealthy snacks in the house. Our meals included a wide variety of vegetables and only lean meats. We were encouraged to drink a lot of water and snack on fresh fruits. My mother signed us up for all sorts of sports and physical activities. I was involved in gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating, soccer and softball. My toys included a jump rope, pogo stick, hula hoop and bicycle. My mother always made time for her workout. Even if we traveled on vacation as a family, she’d get up early and use the hotel’s fitness center, swimming pool or just go for a run. She has never smoked, been overweight or drank much alcohol. My mother earned her black belt in karate when she was in her sixties. She is now 81 years old and still keeps up with her fitness regiment. She stretches, goes through lunges, squats and ab crunches, does push ups and holds a plant position every day. She sometimes uses a stairmaster. Despite her age, my mother remains slim, healthy, strong and active. She enjoys excellent quality of life, has suffered no major health setbacks and has needed no surgeries. I am always amazed by her stamina. She is truly an inspiration to me. Because of her, I take very good care of myself. I can only hope to age as gracefully as she has.
