Decorating our off campus residence

My very first year away at university I lived in the freshman dorm! It was not such a great experience, from top to bottom.

As soon as the rules allowed it I moved off campus.

At that university, freshmen were basically required to live on campus, it was the general rule, so I just suffered through it! All kinds of stinky people stayed in that dorm, and hardly any of us had any sense of decorum… People drank and partied and caroused around in the hallways, it was severely scandalous. Sophomore year I got several roommates, and the people I was with and I decorated our new residence with classic elegance and all handmade furniture. For people who are like us, cruising for antiques is about as fun a weekend as the people I was with and I could have, so the people I was with and I would drive for a number of hours looking for the most fantastic old wooden furniture. If you look not only in antique stores but flea markets and junk shops you can get yourself some wooden furniture far superior to anything you can find in a big box store. What I prefer the most about old wooden furniture is how it gives me a sense of connection to local history and culture. It could be that you just see a set of wooden chairs, each a little different, although I see the farmhand who built them all by himself. I definitely know about what his life must have been like. Back then people had to make their own wooden furniture because there were no stores, and if you didn’t want to relax on the ground then you had to put together a chair! They are sturdy, strong, and stunning. This was fitting for the classic elegance of myself and my roommates.
