When my wife and I were looking at houses, we found several options that were affordable and in our price range. One of the houses was definitely a fixer-upper. It needed new flooring, drywall, carpet, and several other cosmetic changes. My wife and I thought the bones of the house were basically good, so we made an offer on the house. When the offer was accepted, my wife and I contacted a contractor to inspect the home and all of the interior systems. We decided to hire a home inspection service that was completely and totally thorough. They looked at everything inside of the house and went through the heating, plumbing, electrical, and AC system with a fine-tooth comb. The contractor found several issues with the plumbing, heating, and AC system. A lot of the plumbing needed to be replaced in order for the home to meet the building codes. The heating and AC system needed to be replaced as well. It was 20 years old and no longer energy efficient. After my wife and I got the report from the contractor, we quickly realized that the house wasn’t for us. We didn’t mind making a couple of changes, but we didn’t want to spend the first year in the house in the middle of a construction process. We needed to find something that needed less work. I really like the house, but we ended up finding something even better. We got four bedrooms instead of three and an extra half bathroom for the same price as the other house.
