I never thought I would make such a statement, but last week I told someone that my furnace was working too well.
We turned it on to take the chill off the house, but it didn’t turn off. It was getting so hot that I was walking around in my bare feet and I had on a tank top and shorts. I called the HVAC company and told them there was a problem with the furnace. The woman I was talking to asked several questions and asked if my thermostat was okay. She said that sometimes the batteries would die, and the thermostat wasn’t able to tell the furnace to shut down. I told her to stay on the phone as I found the new batteries and put them in the thermostat, but it still wasn’t shutting down. I was getting upset and asked what I should do now. She said to look at the thermostat and see what the temperature was and where I had it set. I told her I had set it for seventy, but it was now eighty-two. She said she didn’t have an HVAC technician available, but she would have someone there as soon as possible. Two hours later, the temperature had climbed to ninety-one, and I had my windows opened. I was getting ready to walk out when the HVAC technician arrived. He did an inspection of the furnace and said it was definitely the thermostat. The batteries didn’t die, but we needed a new thermostat. Ten minutes later, he had changed the thermostat and my furnace had quit running.
