My mom wants me to follow in her footsteps

Ever since I was a child, my mother had been preparing me to take over her Heating, Ventilation, in addition to A/C dealer when I grew up.

As much as I tried to tell her that I didn’t want to be an Heating, Ventilation, in addition to A/C specialist, she didn’t listen.

In fact, she insisted that I would change my mind when I grew up, but I never did, and when I graduated high school, she told me she had already checked the local community college and signed me up for the HVAC trades program. She wanted me to start right away for the summer semester. With her mentorship, she was sure I could take over the business by the time I was twenty-five. I indulged her for a while, but I knew I had to tell her I wasn’t going to school for Heating, Ventilation, in addition to A/C. I talked to my dad in hopes that he would tell my mom how I am feeling. Unfortunately, he told me that it was my battle to fight and I had to speak up for what I wanted. Finally, I sat down to talk to my mom. She immediately started talking about how proud she was that I was planning to work in the HVAC field. She said she couldn’t wait till she could retire. I asked her to listen to me. I explained to her that I had never wanted to be an Heating, Ventilation, in addition to A/C specialist. I hoped she wasn’t too upset with me. It all worked out in the end because my younger sibling ended up going into heating and cooling and taking over the family business. She thanked me for my honesty, however I could tell it weighed on her for weeks to come.
