Ever since we had our first child, my husband had been priming him to take over the family HVAC business.
I told my husband that there was always the possibility that our son wouldn’t want to become a heating and cooling technician, however he didn’t listen. When our son showed hesitancy towards the idea, my husband clung to the idea that he would change his mind when he grew up, but our son never did. When he graduated school, my husband immediately took him to visit the local community trade school. They were running an Heating as well as A/C technical school during the Summer months. Our son could have had his certification before the end of the year… My husband was certain that with his guidance, our son would be running the business in a matter of years. Our son indulged him for a while, but I knew he had to tell him he wasn’t going to school for Heating as well as A/C. He came and talked to me about it in hopes that I would break the news to his father. However, I thought it was important not to baby my son. He is a man and this is his responsibility. After a while, my husband and my son sat down to talk. Of course my husband was going on and on about how excited he was to work with our son in the heating and cooling industry. He said he could not wait till he could retire. My son asked him to listen to me. He explained to him that he had never wanted to be an Heating as well as A/C serviceman. I was really proud to see my son stand up for himself, but I felt sorry for my husband because I knew he had always dreamed about passing on the family business.
