We have owned a small apartment building since before I was born.
I was raised working with my dad as the superintendent, and by the time I was fourteen, I was doing some of the work on my own.
When I went to college, my father was a bit upset. I was the one who worked on the HVAC system and kept it working. He was upset as he wondered who was going to work on the HVAC system when I wasn’t home. I was going to the local university, and I would still be home every weekend, but I also needed time to study. I suggested hiring an HVAC company so we had an HVAC technician on call if it was necessary. Dad wasn’t happy with this idea, but he grudgingly agreed. When I came home for the summer, I thought I would step right back into my old job, but I was wrong. The new HVAC technician who was kept on retainer, had taken over my place in the business. He even came to the house and had dinner with my parents. I was so jealous that I could have spit. I asked my father if he didn’t need me anymore and complained that it didn’t take long for him to replace me. My dad had the guts to laugh. He said he couldn’t replace me because I was his son. As far as replacing the HVAC technician I was trying to be, he needed one and this guy was available. He was also a lot of fun to have around.
