Why are AC refrigerant leaks dangerous?

Any electrical or mechanical system leaking fluids, be it visible or not, is a problem.

Your air conditioning system is no exception.

Your HVAC system can cool your home during hot summer days since it absorbs heat and generates cool air. This HVAC technology is made possible by refrigerant use, a mixture of substances, typically a fluid, which undergoes various phase transitions from liquid to gas and gas to liquid. The refrigerant is a key component of your HVAC system. Without it, your air conditioner won’t be capable of cooling your home. Air conditioning systems may sometimes leak refrigerants. Not only is an AC leaking refrigerant detrimental to the environment, but it is also a safety and health risk concern. There are different types of AC refrigerants on the market today. The levels of danger they pose are also different. Some of the most commonly used refrigerants include CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs. These refrigerants are toxic to the environment. Refrigerants in older units such as R22 are banned from manufacturing and importation due to their toxicity and contribution to ozone layer depletion and climate change. In addition to the environmental impacts, refrigerant leaks may also affect the human body negatively. Exposure to leaking refrigerants may cause multiple adverse symptoms to human health. These symptoms include irregular heartbeat, labored breathing, nausea, bleeding in the lungs, seizures, headaches, vomiting, skin burns, cough, loss of consciousness, irritation of eyes, throat, ears, and decreased mental status. As if that’s not enough, you might end up dead.
