Surprises in the air ducts

The new guy always gets the worst jobs. That’s how it works no matter where you go – the rookie is assigned the stuff no one else wants. I have been the new guy at several jobs over the years. I never stick around a job long enough to become an experienced tech, I’m always the one saddled with grunt work. If I really cared that much I would stay put for longer than a few months. Sometimes doing grunt work can pay some sweet dividends. The HVAC contractor was hired to clean out the abandoned strip mall so that it could be refurbished. He and his crew went in to do a full HVAC system inspection, and found that it didn’t need to be replaced, just to be cleaned and tuned up. Since I was a rookie, I got assigned for the grunt duty of ductwork cleaning. Here is where the story gets interesting, folks, because inside one of the dirt-encrusted air vents I found a wrapped wad of cash wrapped in plastic. The money was not neat and bundled, it was literally a zip-lock bag of loose cash that had been stuffed into the ductwork. I didn’t count it, didn’t say anything about it, just took the bag from the air vent and slipped it into my pocket. When I got home that night I counted it. There had been six thousand bucks stuffed into that air vent, and now it was mine. I didn’t feel bad at all about keeping it, HVAC techs usually don’t get tips like this.
