It is a great idea to have some basic knowledge about mechanical issues and carpentry troubleshooting. If you know a few simple skills, you can save a ton of energy, time, and money down the road when you are a homeowner. You don’t want to be calling out certified professionals all the time for easy matters that you could solve yourself. My kids are always nodding along and telling me to be quiet, but they really should pay attention. As a young adult, I was able to secure a new living situation for myself thanks only to my handyman skills. I had just left home, and had nothing in my name. I just happened to see a rental listing for a nice apartment, which included a strange note at the bottom. The note indicated that any tenant who was familiar with central heating and cooling systems would get moved to the top of the priority list. Apparently, the apartment complex needed somebody to perform routine HVAC maintenance throughout several of the units. Rather than hiring an official heating and cooling technician for each and every air handling appliance, the property manager wanted to find a renter with some basic air handling equipment skills. I was more than happy to throw my hat into the ring and show him my basic ventilation repair stills. Within a week, I had a brand new home, excellent HVAC equipment, and I was barely paying any rent. I keep telling my kids, you need to learn handy skills.
