The AC was off and the dog pooped on the floor

My mom’s best friend needed someone to house sit for her and I offered to do the job. She has one dog and a cat. I had to go to the house on Friday evening to walk the dog and feed both of the animals. I told the woman that I would spend the night in the house on Friday and Saturday as long as I didn’t have any plans. When I got to the house, it was already after dark. The woman did not leave until 4:00 in the afternoon, so I thought it was perfectly fine not to go to the place until later that evening. When I opened up the door, a terrible and awful smell hit me in the face along with excessive heat and humidity. It did not feel like the air conditioner was running at all. It also smelled like the dog had pooped somewhere on the floor while I was gone. I searched for a light next to the door, so I didn’t accidentally step in any poop on the way into the house. It took a few minutes to find the place where the dog went to the bathroom. The poor dog thought I was going to scold him, but I knew that it wasn’t his fault. The AC unit was off. I turned it on and the cold air came out of the vents quickly. I adjusted the temperature on the thermostat to 72°. The woman had it set on 76 and there was no way that was going to be cool enough for me if I was going to spend the night with the dog and the cat.
