Stopping the draft helps lessen HVAC load

There was just no ignoring what was happening last winter.

The HVAC furnace was seemingly never cycling off.

The thing just kept running in order to try to keep up with demand. This was an expensive proposition and the winter wasn’t even all that terrible. The idea came to me that maybe the HVAC heating system was on its way out. That was something that I was not going to be happy about if true. Our furnace was not even quite 10 years old yet. This fall, I had the HVAC people come out and give the HVAC a complete inspection and service. The HVAC tech took his time and went over every single inch of the HVAC heating method. There was not a thing wrong with the furnace. He finished up with some preventive service and gave the HVAC heating unit a glowing report. This really stumped me. I talked with the HVAC guy and we walked around to have a look at the ductwork. While there were a couple of places that could have been resealed, the ductwork was in decent enough shape. This too was not the cause for the HVAC running all the time. Finally, he suggested that I really put in the effort to make sure the house was tight. That meant new weather stripping everywhere, new storm doors and adding insulation in the attic. I also worked really hard to be sure that any gap in the exterior was sealed as well. I’m feeling already that this effort is going to pay off huge dividends. While it hasn’t gotten really cold yet, I can tell already that the HVAC is running much less.
