My AC System Froze

When I woke up yesterday, I noticed that my house was feeling warmer than normal.

Like most people in this situation, I assumed the thermostat had been set to a higher temperature by my husband.

He tends to get cold in the middle of the night, and it isn’t uncommon for him to raise the temperature. However, when I looked at the thermostat, my heart sank. It was reading as 78 degrees inside my house, even though the thermostat was programmed to 73 degrees. Reluctantly, I shut off my AC system and called my HVAC guy. My AC system was due for it’s annual HVAC servicing anyway, so now was as good a time as ever. When my HVAC guy came over, he told me that my AC system was frozen and he immediately turned the blower on to help thaw the evaporator coils. While he was working, I asked him how he could tell that my AC system was frozen so quickly. He said that there were several red flags that pointed to a frozen AC unit, the first being a home that wouldn’t cool properly. Next, he showed me the frozen evaporator coils first hand, so I could see the ice first hand. I’m so glad my HVAC guy is friendly and willing to slow down and show me things like this so I can take care of my HVAC system better in the future. Now, I will know when my AC system is frozen and the steps I need to take in order to fix it.
