Is geothermal Heating, Ventilation, & A/C only for new homes?

My husband Ed & I were hunting for a new Heating, Ventilation, & A/C system.

Ed had been looking into geothermal Heating, Ventilation, & A/C, but I was sure geothermal was just for new homes.

Ed told me it would be simple to install geothermal Heating, Ventilation, & A/C into our home. Ed and I lived near a lake & had plenty of apartment to install the pipes, however this house had enough clearance to get the pipes into the house. I asked if Ed and I would need to install air duct into the house. When he said that was a setback, I wasn’t quite sure geothermal was a cost Ed and I could afford to incur. I understood geothermal Heating, Ventilation, & A/C uses the ambient heat of the earth to heat & cool a house, however the upgrade & device were going to be fancy. Ed and I would then have the cost of the new air duct, & my pal and I had little clearance in our basement. Ed and I would also need to open up walls for the air duct in the attic rooms. Ed and I knew my pal and I would need to do more research into geothermal & all the costs that went with it. While I was cooking supper, Ed was on the cellphone with a friend of his, but Joe was an Heating, Ventilation, & A/C specialist, & he offered to come to the house & look at everything to supply us some ideas. Joe said he didn’t think geothermal would be a wise idea for us. The cost would be prohibitive for us. He then proposed Ed and I try a mini split Heating, Ventilation, & A/C system. He said it used the same premise as the geothermal, however it used the ambient heat in the air flow instead of in the ground. The mini split heated & cooled, & the cost was half as much as the geothermal 1.
