Moving for a job

When I was offered a promotion at work, the higher pay and better title required a move across the country.

I was actually excited to start fresh in a new location.

However, I had very little time to pack up my belongings, drive 16 hours and knew absolutely no one when I arrived. I needed to have living arrangements made ahead of time. I searched through all different types of apartment listings. I was looking for something reasonable, situated near my job and with off-street parking. I hoped to be close to shopping, restaurants and activities. Because I had to move in almost immediately, my options were very limited. Plus, most of the apartment complexes required security deposits and a minimum of a year-long lease. I didn’t have any money saved up and was reluctant to commit to twelve months. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the new job or the area. What if I got homesick and wanted to turn right around and head back? I ended up finding an apartment through an ad on Craigslist. The apartment is actually an older house that has some historic charm. There’s hardwood floors, high ceilings, big windows and a fantastic front porch. However, there aren’t enough electrical outlets or hot water, and the heater is temperamental. I also have a roommate who is a bit unusual. My roommate spends a lot of time sitting on the couch, eating ice cream and watching sports. He’s not great about doing the dishes or his laundry, but he has the magic touch when it comes to the heating system. When the outside temperature drops down to twenty below zero, he’s the only one that can keep it working.
