Roommate doesn’t care that energy bill is too high

The older I get, the more I realize that adult human relationships are largely based on finances.

  • I’ve just noticed – if you want a successful relationship with someone, you need to have honest talks about managing money.

This is true even in platonic roommate situations. We all know by now, living with people is hard work. This financial cooperation issue always comes up for me when I start considering bills, budgeting, and cooperating financially with a roommate. It’s best to get all your heating, cooling, and air quality control arguments out of the way ASAP. This is why I recently tried to sit down and talk about the thermostat as it relates to the usual energy bill with my roommate. This is something that I knew we needed to discuss, but I put it off. Ever since, I’ve been paying for my heating and cooling system out the nose. The problem is, we only have a central indoor air temperature control system, so we have to agree on air temperature and quality when using this centralized HVAC system. Too bad, we clearly have vastly differing levels of responsibility when it comes to the thermostat settings, HVAC equipment, and heating, cooling, and air quality service appointments. I accidentally signed a lease with someone who doesn’t care about finances or budgeting, let alone keeping up with the HVAC equipment. Energy bills don’t bother her, so we can’t talk about the heating and cooling system utilization. I can’t even bring up the air quality topic without a fight. As a result, we constantly have heating and cooling system breakdowns and ever-increasing high energy bills. I wish I could move, but the electric bill keeps me from having any spare money.
