Refugees Need to Learn to Use Air Conditioning

I have a friend who used to work for a charitable organization, and they did a lot of work with refugees who had managed to get to our country.

Refugees are a bit different, legally, from immigrants. Refugees are, as the name implies, grated refuge from some terrible situation and allowed to move here to prevent them from coming to harm or suffering unjustly. The process can be a arduously long one, and sometimes people are living in other countries in refugee camps for twenty years or more. That means, when they come here, they need help to adjust. That is what my friend did; she introduced them to American life and helped them get situated. Depending on where they came from, they had to learn different things such as how to use indoor plumbing, lights, and so on. Almost every single person had no clue about heating and cooling. In fact, some of them confided that they thought stories of air conditioning and magical heating that comes through the floor were wild tales they thought were fairy tales. I am sure she must have found her work incredibly moving and satisfying. She would teach them about the water heater, too, and they were amazed by having hot water to take a shower or bath so effortlessly. Her work did not stop indoors, though. She had to teach them about the city buses, the “walk” signs that allowed them to cross the street, and countless other things. Without a doubt, though, they were most amazed by our ability to have modern heating and cooling in our homes and businesses.
