There was a time when I was put on the spot when I first became an HVAC technician.
I started with a really great HVAC trainer who entirely knew his stuff.
He taught me so much in the first two weeks and I felt pretty good about what I was doing. He let me work on the HVAC units so many times and he even said he felt confident that I could be doing this work on my own soon enough. Well, at one of the jobs we were at, the HVAC trainer got an emergency call. It turned out that his wife was in the hospital and he had to get over there because she was in some type of accident. He asked me if I thought I could complete the job on my own. I told him to be on his way to take care of his wife, and I would do the job. I explained to the family what was going on since my HVAC trainer didn’t have time to stick around. I explained to them that because I was new, I would supply them with a discount on their HVAC service. I also said if they felt more comfortable, I could call for another HVAC professional to take care of the work. They smiled and said they had faith in me and allowed me to do the work. I really must say, I didn’t do a bad job at all and I had their HVAC working perfectly. They were so happy with the service and the discount, that they offered me a really big tip. I tried to refuse, but they insisted. Right after the job, I got a hold of my HVAC trainer to make sure he and his wife were okay. It turned out that she was going to be alright.
