AC got me off the family farm, then brought me back

The family farm has been around for seven generations, and has grown larger and more successful with every one of them.

I was one of four siblings, thankfully, because they provided ample cover for my escape.

Life on the farm was never the life for me, even though the pressure to continue the family business was always prevalent. I do not like slopping hogs, or chopping chicken, or running the tiller, or any of that other rustic farm stuff that my brothers and sisters seem to love. I love my family dearly, so it isn’t like I wanted to escape, I just needed something different. My lifeline ended up being the HVAC industry, and I moved into town to start going to school. I threw myself into the work, and quickly secured an apprenticeship with one of the local HVAC contractors. For two years I basically lived and breathed HVAC work, putting in 60 or 70 hour weeks and taking all the on-call and overtime I could get. Eventually I landed a better job with a bigger contractor, who listed my parents farm as one of their major HVAC clients. I convinced my parents to cancel that contract, and I became their private on-called HVAC technician. It makes me really happy to see them more often, and to save them a lot of money by handling all of their heating and cooling problems myself. Working the family farm was not for me, but I still wanted to help out my family, so now I can do that with my HVAC skills.
